On March 2nd a group of Messmer students participated in an assembly that honored African-American History Month. This year's theme was The Great Migration. It was clear by the reaction that the audience was personally affected by the presentations. The After School Choir provided beautiful harmony, Ashley Jordan, Danielle Hill, and Chamura Webb embodied the mindset of a former slave mother, daughter, and slave catcher through a deep collaboration of poetry, and steady musical blending was brought by the Concert Band.
With a closing performance by Senior Denzel Taylor, presenting his poem A Difference, it was obvious that inspiration swept through the minds of the audience as they actively clapped and cheered. Afterwards, Denzel said, “I really enjoyed the show and thought that everyone did a good job with their performances. Everything ran smoothly and in order.”
The program was spearheaded by Messmer English/Social Studies Teacher Mr. Jon Stern who once again provided a thought-provoking, inspiring assembly. Throughout February, movies were shown and workshops held related to the theme of The Great Migration including achieving independence through Financial Literacy.
