On Track
The Messmer track and field team is closing in on the end of
the season. They have shown great talent and have impressed at many different
events. There has been good competition this year bringing the best out of the
athletes. As the season continues,
the team gets better as they improve their personal bests. Senior Denzel Taylor
says that “track is a good way to stay in shape, and the good competition helps
with motivation.” Senior Justino Rodriquez stated that, “the season is
difficult at times, but it helps bring out the best in what we do.”
At the Martin
Luther Spartan Invitational, the team had a good showing. The men’s team placed
fourth overall by placing in the top three in five events. The most recent meet
at Wauwatosa East had great competition and it was a great day, with a few
athletes placing high in their respected events.
Kenneth Myatt won silver in
the 400 meter dash and the boys won bronze in the 4x100 meter relay. The relay
team consists of Jekim Jones, Herb Forbes, Chris Leatherwood and AJ Anderson. The
girl’s 4x400 meter relay has consistently broken the school record. The team
consists of Silvia Washington, LaShauna Patterson, Shavonte Grant and Shela
Grant.
Bishops Baseball On Deck
5.4.12. Halfway through the baseball season, our Messmer Bishops are
showing a good display of sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork. Even though
the team hasn’t picked up a win, coaches and players are confident that it
won’t remain that way. “I am
hopeful that we can turn a page and start writing a new chapter for this program.
We have the potential to win some games, and I believe we will win,” says Messmer Computer Teacher and Coach
Chad Hofmann. Last year only losing one senior meant bringing back a lot of players, which gives the team some experience. Hofmann added, “We
are a more experienced group than last year, and because of that more talented.”
The team is lead by Senior Myles Childs, a 2010-11 All-Conference player. Childs
also is confident that the team’s bad luck will turn around. “We will slowly get
better and win a few games toward the end of the year. We will get better but
only with more practice,” Childs said. When asked about the thing that most
surprised them, they both commented on freshman Raymund Pierce. Raymund is leading the team with a
(.611) batting average, ranking second in the conference. Myles had this to say about Pierce,
“He’s a definite help to the team, I can see he will lead Messmer by his senior
year.” Coach Hofmann added,
“We’ve had some positives, including excellent play from freshman Raymund Pierce.”
The team will keep progressing and getting better, and is confident that it will show with a win against Milwaukee King
tonight, and Milwaukee Madison tomorrow.
Denzel Taylor with a Slam Dunk
The Office of Multicultural Arts Initiatives (OMAI) sponsors an annual Teen Poetry Slam Contest. Founded in 2005, OMAI is a unit of the Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. OMAI provides culturally relevant and transformative arts programming to promote positive social dialogue and to give cultural art forms a legitimate academic forum. Messmer was represented by Senior Denzel Taylor at this year's Slam Contest, and after winning locally, was one of 6 from the state to win a spot in the national contest this summer. The competition, entitled "Brave New Voices" takes place in California in July. Denzel's original poems "99 in Greater Than 1" and "Virus" catapulted him to the top of his game, and won him a ticket to the Bay Area. Messmer's Spoken Word Club is led by Theology Teacher Mr. Jason Gonzalez with the help of Spanish Teacher Ms. Jamie Kramer. Denzel feels Mr. Gonzalez is very encouraging, gives great advice, and doesn't sugar coat anything. He says, "I couldn't have won without him."
"Show of Shows" a Big Success!
The Messmer High School auditorium hosted the 4th annual "Show of Shows" Tuesday night. Our students had a chance to show off their many talents through this powerful, energetic show. The audience was wowed by the skills of the performers, and the professionalism of the backstage crew. The show was under the direction of Messmer Music Teacher Mr. Greg Flattery. See the slideshow at right of highlights from the show.
AAHM: The Great Migration
On March 2nd a group of Messmer students participated in an assembly that honored African-American History Month. This year's theme was The Great Migration. It was clear by the reaction that the audience was personally affected by the presentations. The After School Choir provided beautiful harmony, Ashley Jordan, Danielle Hill, and Chamura Webb embodied the mindset of a former slave mother, daughter, and slave catcher through a deep collaboration of poetry, and steady musical blending was brought by the Concert Band. With a closing performance by Senior Denzel Taylor, presenting his poem A Difference, it was obvious that inspiration swept through the minds of the audience as they actively clapped and cheered. Afterwards, Denzel said, “I really enjoyed the show and thought that everyone did a good job with their performances. Everything ran smoothly and in order.”The program was spearheaded by Messmer English/Social Studies Teacher Mr. Jon Stern who once again provided a thought-provoking, inspiring assembly. Throughout February, movies were shown and workshops held related to the theme of The Great Migration including achieving independence through Financial Literacy.
Love and Basketball
On Tuesday, February 14th the Messmer Bishops Boy's Varsity Basketball team was in action against Wayland Academy. Since it was also Valentine’s Day, the players brought added fashion to the game. They showed off personally made heart socks, created by Senior guard AJ Anderson, who scored 11 points, racked up 6 rebounds, as well as 5 assists in the victory on Valentine’s day. The fun idea for the socks came from a couple of the players who were aware of AJ’s artistic abilities.
AJ’s design included purple stripes on the back, and pink, white, red, and purple hearts on the side of the socks. With all the hearts, flowers, stuffed animals, and candy in the school Tuesday, there was lots of love in the air. The Bishops spread their love to each other on the court, racking up a season high 25 assists, which lead them to a striking 72-49 victory. The Messmer Varsity team is currently rated 6th in the state with a record of 16-3.
The team will be in an action this weekend facing a rival from down the street, The Hope School; only 1 mile separates the two making for a good match-up. Saturday's game is Hope’s "Pack the Gym for Breast Cancer" so come out and support the cause and the team. The Bishops will be closing its season with two home games next week against Brookfield Academy and University School. February 24th is senior night against University School.

Reptiles in the House
2.10.12. Messmer High was invaded by reptiles yesterday to the delight of students and staff. Science Teacher Elizabeth Pritchard arranged for the visit from "Jim Nesci's Cold Blooded Creatures" traveling educational experience. Senior Denzel Taylor said, "It was cool, and I left without any injuries which was a plus. Seeing the huge alligator walk down the carpet was the best part." Mr. Nesci brought a big tortoise, 2 pythons, 2 alligators, and a komodo dragon also known as a monitor lizard. In addition to appearing at schools and community events, Mr. Nesci has appeared on numerous television shows. Here is a link to a video of some of his most memorable appearances: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgqkumvcGR4.See slide show at right for more pictures of the creatures at Messmer.
NHS: The Best of the Best
1.26.12. Thirteen new Messmer students were inducted into the National Honor Society tonight in the high school auditorium, bringing the total members to 27. Veteran member Senior Eduardo Castaneda says NHS holds "a big role in my life because it shows I am a leader and an example to other students." New inductee, Junior Alma Valdivi, said, "It's an honor because you are chosen as a well-rounded, respected student."
SMART Team
There are many teams and clubs at Messmer. There is the football team, basketball team and a track team, among others. On particular team, however, doesn’t have any physical requirements. The participants need to have strong minds, analytical prowess, and great communication skills. The Messmer SMART team has people who fulfill those requirements with great class and poise. They use their creativity and thinking skills to put together a protein model. There are many things that are important in order for the team to succeed. Team leader and Science Teacher Ms. Carol Johnson said her job is “to motivate and encourage” the participants and to make sure they understand the material so that they may apply it. She also said that the goal for the moment is to complete the protein model. The SMART team has made progress so far as a unit and continue to push forward toward their goal.
Senior David Gonzalez said one thing that is difficult about being on the team is “meeting all of the deadlines.” With so much work this year, he enjoys the opportunity to “learn things that college students learn and being able to explain that to people.” They all have been working very hard so far and plan on getting to the top in future projects.
