On Track

The Messmer track and field team is closing in on the end of the season. They have shown great talent and have impressed at many different events. There has been good competition this year bringing the best out of the athletes.  As the season continues, the team gets better as they improve their personal bests. Senior Denzel Taylor says that “track is a good way to stay in shape, and the good competition helps with motivation.” Senior Justino Rodriquez stated that, “the season is difficult at times, but it helps bring out the best in what we do.”
At the Martin Luther Spartan Invitational, the team had a good showing. The men’s team placed fourth overall by placing in the top three in five events. The most recent meet at Wauwatosa East had great competition and it was a great day, with a few athletes placing high in their respected events.
Kenneth Myatt won silver in the 400 meter dash and the boys won bronze in the 4x100 meter relay. The relay team consists of Jekim Jones, Herb Forbes, Chris Leatherwood and AJ Anderson. The girl’s 4x400 meter relay has consistently broken the school record. The team consists of Silvia Washington, LaShauna Patterson, Shavonte Grant and Shela Grant.
The co-ed track team is coached by Messmer Physical Education Teacher Ms. Sue Feuerstein and Vice Principal Mr. Geoffrey Kaiser. Regionals and sectionals are approaching where the best of the best show their talents. Expect Messmer to be in that discussion.
